UNWTO unveils campaign for good tourist etiquette

KUALA LUMPUR: In a bid to promote good tourist etiquette, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recently launched its “Travel.Enjoy.Respect” campaign.

AFP Relaxnews reports that the campaign, which will run in various languages, includes a manual developed by the World Committee on Tourism Ethics in line with the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

The manual – Tips for a Responsible Traveller – provides tourists with a set of recommendations to help them make responsible choices when travelling and create a positive impact on the destinations they visit.

In a statement, UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai said the campaign is summarised as “Whenever you travel, wherever you travel, remember to respect nature, respect culture, and respect your host.

“You can be the change you want to see in the world. You can be an ambassador for a better future. Travel, enjoy and respect.”

The handbook’s tips for being a responsible tourist include always asking for permission before taking photos of other people to respect their privacy; refraining from giving money to begging children; learning to speak a few words of the local language; and making sure your purchases aren’t comprised of endangered plants or animals.
