Malaysia Heads for Election in Leader's Biggest Test Since 1MDB Scandal

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—Prime Minister Najib Razak has called elections, but the credibility of Malaysia’s democracy is in question after his government backed a series of moves that have curtailed opponents’ ability to compete.

The election is the starkest test yet of whether Mr. Najib and his ruling Barisan Nasional, or National Front, coalition can overcome the effects of the problems at state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd., or 1MDB, that have rocked his administration for years.
