NEW DELHI: Indian police thwarted an attempt by a man to smuggle about 50kg of drugs into Malaysia from Chennai when they seized a consignment hidden in a cargo container.
Authorities have also launched a hunt for the fugitive, an official of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), India’s top anti-smuggling agency, was quoted as saying by local media on Tuesday (Dec 19).
The street value of the drugs is estimated at US$1.4mil (RM5.7mil).
The seized consignment, which was found hidden in a cargo container, comprised 44.2kg of methaqualone, a sedative known as mandrax, and 5.9kg of piperonal, a controlled substance that can be used for making party drugs, Ecstasy or MDMA.
The unidentified DRI officer noted that the Customs Department had cleared the container and the drugs were recovered after a tip-off.
The addresses used in the consignment were found to be fake, he said. – Bernama
